Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is not contagious. It is a common chronic condition characterized by airflow obstruction, which can progress to chronic bronchitis or emphysema, and may further develop into pulmonary heart disease and respiratory failure. COPD is associated with abnormal inflammatory responses to harmful gases and particles, leading to high rates of disability and mortality. The global prevalence of COPD among individuals over 40 years old has reached 9% to 10%. COPD is a preventable and treatable disease, with progressive airflow limitation linked to enhanced chronic inflammatory responses in the airways and lungs to harmful particles or gases. The exact cause of COPD remains unclear, but it is generally believed that factors related to its onset may contribute to its development. Identified risk factors can be broadly categorized into external factors (i.e., environmental factors) and internal factors (i.e., individual susceptibility factors).
